Baby Safe Sleep Coalition (BSSC), a program of Jewish Family Services (JFS), is a community wide education program committed to eliminating preventable infant fatalities caused by unsafe sleep practices in Monroe County.
Our mission: BSSC believes that every baby is loved, cherished, and deserves a chance at a happy, healthy life. We work to save babies from preventable deaths due to unsafe sleep conditions by providing education, community advocacy, and resources to those who care for infants.
Between 2007 and 2019, in Monroe County, 117 infants under twelve months of age died after being placed in an unsafe sleeping environment. The babies were sleeping in a position or a place where their breathing became obstructed, and they were too young to be able to move away. The Baby Safe Sleep Coalition educates parents about the importance of babies sleeping by themselves, on their backs in a crib without blankets, toys, pillows, or bumpers. Our goal is to reduce and even eliminate these tragic deaths by increasing community awareness so that all babies are put to sleep in a safe, risk-free environment.
